Together with the half-timbered village of the same name, the castle ruins of Monreal form one of the most romantic ensembles in the Eifel. The larger of the two complexes, which is often referred to as the “Löwenburg“, has been in the care of the castle administration since 1970.
The castle was built shortly before 1229 by the Counts of Virneburg, a respected noble family from the Eifel region. Together with the smaller complex and the village of Monreal (Latin for “Königsberg“), it served the family as a second seat of power – just a few kilometres away from Virneburg Castle. In 1632, the complex, which had become an electorate office, was first destroyed by Swedish troops and finally by French troops in 1689.
Today, large parts of the castle still remain, giving a good impression of how imposing it once was. Particularly striking are the remains of the keep with its three-metrethick walls and a height of 25 metres. There are also remains of early medieval residential buildings, a shield wall from the 15th century and an early Gothic chapel.
