The castle ruins of the same name are enthroned on a mountain spur above the Nims Valley near the municipality of Schönecken.
Schönecken Castle was illegally founded by the Counts of Vianden on the grounds of Prüm Abbey. At the end of the 14th century, the site was allocated to the Archbishops of Trier, who appointed their own officials. From then on, the castle served as a base for the archbishops in their disputes with the abbey. When Prüm Abbey was finally awarded to the Electorate in 1576, Schönecken lost its strategic function.
It was sold for demolition in 1804 and restored for the first time in 1906. In 1970, the site came into the possession of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which renovated the defence towers and walls until 1975. Further restoration work was
completed in 2020.
The silhouette of the castle is characterised by three towers that are open to the inside of the castle. These striking towers and the sections of wall connecting them have been part of a multi-storey residential building since the 16th century at the latest.
