The imposing Bertradaburg Castle towers high above the Eifel village of Mürlenbach. From an architectural point of view, it is one of the most striking and important fortifications in the Eifel. According to a medieval legend, its name goes back to Bertrada the Elder, the greatgrandmother of Charlemagne.
The complex, first mentioned in the 14th century, is a type of fortress castle. The eye-catching gate building with its double towers is particularly striking. With the exception of the ground floor, all storeys were connected to each other. This is where representative living quarters and a chapel were located. The third floor contains the controls for the reconstructed wooden trapdoor. After visiting the gatehouse, it is definitely worth taking a look at the remains of the two large 16th century gun turrets, which are impressive thanks to their sheer massiveness and a wall thickness of five metres.
The castle complex is partly privately owned and can only be accessed at certain times and in certain areas.
