Welcome to Kasselburg Castle Ruins

Kasselburg Castle overlooking the Kyll Valley near Pelm is one of the most impressive late medieval fortifications in the Eifel.
It was first documented in 1290/91 and was subsequently owned by the Lords of Blankenheim, an influential noble family from the Eifel region. From the 15th century onwards, it changed hands several times and was used as a barracks for a time in the 17th century.
The 37-metre-high double tower from the 14th century, whose ground floor originally contained a passageway to the castle courtyard, is particularly striking. The tower had a total of eight storeys, some of which were converted into living quarters with fireplaces. Some impressive remains of the core castle which adjoined the gate building, such as the great hall and the chapel building, have been preserved. The two lower storeys of the square keep date back to Romanesque times, making it the oldest part of the complex. Originally freestanding, it was later integrated into the core castle.
Kasselburg Castle was extensively renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries and is now home to an animal enclosure and park featuring eagles and wolves.
