Welcome to Dasburg Castle Ruins

Right on the border with Luxembourg above the romantic Our Valley, you can discover the ruins of Dasburg Castle, which was built in the 13th century.
Various counts, dukes and royal families owned the castle over the centuries before it was sold by the French as a quarry in 1813. A curiosity from this turbulent time: among the numerous aristocratic titles of the Dutch king, the title of ‘Lord of Dasburg’ can still be found today.

A walk along the surrounding wall is well worthwhile. The north side of the defence tower, which is still preserved, is an impressive 20 metres high.

The ruins are open all year round and free to access.

No winter service on site.

The ruins are a historical site of the Generaldirektion Kulturelles Erbe Rheinland-Pfalz (General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland‑Palatinate), www.gdke.rlp.de.

Regrettably, as it is a historic site, there is no disabled access to the castle ruins. Thank you for your understanding.

Dasburg Castle, which was probably built around 1200, is particularly impressive due to its exposed location on a steep mountain spur high above the Our Valley, close to the border with Luxembourg.
In 1222, Prüm Abbey transferred the fiefdom of Dasburg Castle to the Counts of Vianden and from 1417 to the Counts of Nassau. Until the French Revolution, burgraves from the houses of Nassau, Orange and Isenghien took turns at Dasburg Castle. In 1813, it was auctioned off for demolition as property of the French state. Owned by the Prussian state from 1816, Dasburg Castle came into Rhineland-Palatinate ownership in 1945 and has been under the control of the State Administration, now the Directorate of Castles, Palaces and Antiquities, since 1965. In 1970, the former Prussian forester’s lodge from the 19th century was converted into a residential building.
The ruins of Dasburg Castle today present visitors with the remains of a 20-metrehigh keep, which was the centre of the Staufer core castle. It is worth taking a walk along the surrounding wall, which originally had a bridge on its northern narrow side and was pierced by a gateway and several half-towers.
