Welcome to the Widdertshäuschen

With a bit of intuition, you can find the so-called Widdertshäuschen on the valley meadows of the Saar near Serrig.
The name is derived from the German term for gnome and can be translated as “dwarf house“. However, you won‘t find any dwarves or other legendary characters here. Instead, it is a very unusual Gallo-Roman burial site, probably from the 2nd or 3rd century AD.
It consists of a large block of coloured sandstone that was hollowed out to accommodate burials. The mighty cover is shaped like the roof of a house. On one of the gable surfaces is an inscription that is difficult to read today. It tells us that M. Restionius Restitutus, M. Restitutius Auroria(nus) and Restituatia Auro(riana) had this “burial house“ built during their lifetimes. As three people were to be buried here, the cover, which weighed several tonnes, had to be lifted or at least moved at least twice after the first burial.

The ruins are open all year round and free to access.

No winter service on site.
